I Can and the Community Garden
Celebrate Quadra Island's successful bid for a community garden with an evening of fun, food and film. ISLAND ON THE EDGE, a movie on local food sustainability, will be the feature event. Doors open at 7pm, showtime is 7:30.
This Vancouver Island-made documentary features food producers and farmers of Vancouver Island and how they struggle to provide a continuous, healthy food supply for Island residents in the face of corporate agricultural conglomerates and a population that seems to prefer cheaper, imported food. The film also examines the history of food production on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
"With the rise in popularity of the so-called '100-Mile Diet', we thought it was time to show people how their local food is produced and the challenges that exist on the island to give more consumers access to fresh, local ingredients," said Don Genova, food journalist in Cobble Hill and writer of the documentary.
There will also be a yummy concession, raffle prizes, updates on the latest Community Garden developments, and sign up sheets for people wanting to lend a hand and/or apply for a plot.
Admission is by donation. Please support this exciting community initiative.
