What a beautiful day out there today for October! After seven days of mixed weather in Vancouver it is a joy to be back on the island. Time to get things squared away for the approach of winter.
You just never know what is around the corner.
I am going to start this report on a rather personal note. On July 16th I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Quite the "2x4 up the side of the head", I'll tell ya! The good news is that it has been detected early due to regular testing, and the prognosis is very favourable. I will be having surgery on October 13th in Comox and will be in the hospital for about 5 days and then taking it easy at home for a few weeks. I fully intend to beat this. It is just another battle and I have had enough practice at those, to prepare me for this one. I have the best support that a person could have in Wendy and my family. So, I am confident that this will all work out as it should. I am in excellent shape, eat very healthfully and have a very positive outlook.
So there ya go! Thought it would be better that you hear it from me rather than through the grapevine. My alternate will fill in for me at Regional District meetings while I am out of commission and you can direct any questions that you have of a technical nature to the SRD office at 250-830-6700. Follow the prompts to find what you are looking for. I will not be checking messages or emails during the first two weeks after surgery.
Union of BC Municipalities
I just returned home late on Saturday night from one of the most productive UBCM meetings in many years. I was able to meet with many Ministers and their staff on various issues of concern to us in our area. We also had the emergency resolution on the staffing of light stations that I put through our Board. It passed unanimously! It will now be forwarded to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for endorsement there. I would like to thank all of the people that have taken the time to write letters and send them in to government and to the media. I spent the past 30 days working at the level of the Prime Minister, the Minsters and MP's and all opposition MP's and leaders. I have also done interviews with just about every major media outlet since this misguided initiative was announced. The power of the media is unbelievable! Thanks again to all of you.
We are still awaiting word on the Community Adjustment Fund grant that was applied for from the Fed's. The grant is to finish up the hydro right of way to Granite Bay. We also did receive a grant to help keep forestry workers working, in the form of removing danger trees from the trails in Blenkin Park. We also got another grant that we applied for to replace the main sign at the Community Centre. So, we are getting some of our Federal tax dollars back into our community. I always insist that local people are hired for the work and to date have been successful in making that happen.
Quathiaski Cove neighbourhood plan
We have finally cleared up all of the hurdles that were slowing this process from beginning. We are hoping to have the consultant hired by the middle of November and get going shortly thereafter. The meetings will be well advertised in the DI and elsewhere, so keep an eye out for the notices. This will be a very positive and exciting process.
We have had a number of strategic planning sessions and board development sessions. I am very pleased to be able to say that our Board is working out far better than anyone could have imagined. We are working well together and have developed a draft strategic plan for the next five years. We seem to have gotten past the municipal / rural divide that was talked about so much in the former Comox-Strathcona RD. It is really refreshing.
I think that is about it for today. Feel free to call me between the hours of 8:30 am and 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday (not on weekends, folks!) at 285-3355, or you can fax me at 285-3533 or you can email me anytime at abramfamoberon.ark.com , or by mail at Box 278 in the Cove, V0P 1N0... Lots of choices up until next Monday! Then, you'll need to wait until I am back in action.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
