Excerpt from the Vancouver Island Regional Library Website
Our libraries are already green places – our book collections and other materials are recycled daily. We can do better and put an even greener foot forward.
Starting this summer, VIRL will no longer be ordering plastic shopping bags. One of the key goals in the VIRL Consolidated Strategic Plan is to adopt best practices that are sensitive to environmental issues and this is our opportunity to put it into practice in our communities. We are not alone in this; municipalities in the VIRL region, including Duncan and Tofino are already considering a ban on these bags. To put it in perspective, last year VIRL distributed 60,000 plastic bags or about one bag for every three customers.
We want you to join us in this initiative: when you visit your library, please bring your own bag – a knapsack, a book bag or even a recycled shopping bag. We have attractive, inexpensive VIRL library book bags – made of sturdy cloth with handles – perfect for carrying your books home with you. They can be purchased at your local library branch.
If you have concerns or would like to offer feedback, please email David Alexander, Communications and Privacy Officer at dalexandervirl.bc.ca .

I saw a woman on Wed. who had a wonderful grocery bag made from those plasticbags. They were cut into strips and woven/crochetted ? into a very strong and durable carry-all. I was impressed. I would like to see more of those made and in use.
