I came to Quadra Island from Vancouver in 1995 and began making pottery here in 1996. I have been profoundly influenced by Quadra’s natural environment where I live surrounded by water, rock, trees and sky. My pottery speaks of this intense and constant relationship with the natural environment in a vocabulary of texture, colour and alteration of the thrown form.

I choose my glaze palette to enhance this relationship. The surprise of lifting a charcoal coloured lid to a lavender interior is as intoxicating a moment as a melon sliced to reveal the rich fruit within.

Strong elements of design support the organic references of surface, gesture and colour within a contemporary context. People are drawn to my pottery for its uniqueness, for its personality, for its contemporary feel, for “at last, something different.”

I savour the idea that someone will choose my pottery for daily use, for something suggested in the rim or the attitude of the body. That they will lift it with pleasure to their lips, feel the exterior surface with their hands and witness the unveiling of colour within.
