“Imagine a world where chipmunks are heroes and fire breathing dragons always keep their word; where giants live on clouds and fairies are nasty little creatures who care only for themselves...Imagine Wasilika.” Thus reads an excerpt from the back cover of Wasilika, a new novel written by Quadra Island author and teacher, Michael Redican. Wasilika is being launched on Sunday, March 7 at 2pm in the Quadra Community Centre.
A fantasy novel, Wasilika is a story about two sisters who find themselves transported to a world that is being terrorized by an evil tyrant. In order to help the Wasilikans the girls embark on a quest to find five magic buttons.
One of the unusual things about this novel, according to the author, is how it was written. “It started off as a short story about two girls who were in my grade 3/4 class last year. When I read the story to the class, everyone responded enthusiastically and demanded to be characters in a longer version. So I had each student pick a role they wanted – dragon, dolphin, fairy, princess, you name it – and away we went. Each week I wrote another chapter and read it aloud to them. By the end of the year we had ourselves a novel.”
The book launch will feature short readings by some of the characters in the story as well as the author. In addition there will be the rare opportunity to pick up a copy of a novel that has been signed not only by the author but by a dragon, a wise beaver, a snake, a dog with healing powers, a most unpleasant tyrant, and a squirrel. Imagine Wasilika.
Note: Wasilika will be available at Book Bonanza in Quathiaski Cove, Quadra Gifts in Heriot Bay and the The Heriot Bay Inn Gift Shop.
