So here is the good news: applications for tenants are available! To obtain the form and apply to live in Seniors Housing please call Jeanne at 285 2835. All applicants must be 65 years or older, a Canadian Citizen or Landed Immigrant with an established connection to Quadra Island for more than two years. Applications from couples with one partner who has these qualifications, will be accepted. Priority will be given to those whose present housing is inadequate for their physical needs and psychological well being. Income in and of itself (including equity), will not disqualify a person or couple. Preference may be given to a person or couple whose financial resources restrict them from acquiring adequate housing. It is important, that applicants are capable of independent living (units are wheelchair accessible). All information on the application is confidential - applicants will be selected by a committee composed of three community members. The deadline to apply for the first two units is November 5th. The second duplex or units three and four will have a deadline for application in the new year.
The Ministry of Housing and Social Services has extended our Job Creation Partnership until the end of March. This partnership depends on the three participants, who are doing a wonderful job. Their skills are obviously improving and they should be proud of what they are building for our community. As well, the JCP is donating more funding to keep us going ahead with the project. Thanks to the Ministry and the Canada - British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement for this financial help. A note of appreciation is extended to the Campbell River Ministry staff - they have been on our team this last year - thanks again for all of your help and patience.
We would like to thank Wired Electric for donating a portion of the cost of the electrical install and for donating all of the electrical design, which was completed many months ago. Thanks to Bob McDonnell and his crew for this large donation - it is greatly appreciated. Chris Phillips of Ontrack Excavating did a great job on the final grading of the site, donating much of his time. Thanks for taking so much care Chris. Ross Doak of All Clear Septic Services has looked after the crew for months: donating the porta potti and all of the ongoing servicing. We appreciate your dedicated community spirit Ross.
To be able to complete the second duplex early next year is a great achievement. The Board agonized over borrowing money to make this happen. Now we are committed to a plan and we are going into debt. The Society will be fundraising through the next year for repayment of the loan to a point when we can manage a mortgage with the rental income. We still have a third future duplex to build - how many years will it take to reach this goal? If you can help with fundraising ideas please contact one of the Directors.
