To comply with Provincial Riparian Areas Regulation (RAR), the Strathcona Regional District has drafted proposed amendments to regulatory bylaws affecting Cortes Island, Quadra Island and Desolation Sound, named as follows: “Bylaw No. 86, Cortes Island Zoning Bylaw, 2002, Amendment No. 24”; “Bylaw No. 85 Quadra Island Zoning Bylaw, 1990, Amendment No. 98”; and “Bylaw No. 88, Electoral Area ‘J’-Desolation Sound Rural Land Use Bylaw, 1993, Amendment No. 9”. These proposed amendments will implement the Riparian Areas Regulation (RAR) for Cortes Island, Quadra Island and Desolation Sound. These bylaws propose to protect riparian areas by including references to the RAR and incorporating the triggers of the regulation and the requirements for residential, commercial or industrial development within 30.0 metres of a stream that supports fish habitat.
