By now, you have probably heard what BC Ferries and the BC Ferry Commission are forecasting for fare increases over the next four years. Including this year's increase of 6.71% our fares have increased over 90% in the last 7 years! The forecasted increases for the next four years are 8.23% per year. The only way to put and end to this madness is for the Ministry of Transportation to increase the service fee to BC Ferries, or to allow BC Ferries to reduce service levels. It remains at $92 million since 2003. This is the amount that is directed at fares for the minor routes. The new minister, Blair Lekstrom has been making comments in the press that appear to be encouraging. He has agreed that fares are too high and has promised to take a hard look at the proposed increases. So, let's give him some ammunition to take to his fellow caucus members! Send him an email and let him know how devastating these fares are (and will be) to our economy. Since 2003, our school population has decreased by almost 100 students, and the number of houses and property for sale has more than tripled! Young families are moving off the island because they can't afford to live here anymore! Businesses are closing and tourism is declining. His email address is Minister.Transportationgov.bc.ca Let him know how you feel and tell your friends to do the same! It's not too late to save our community.
