Well we are getting pretty close to the end of August and you know what that means! September will be right behind! (sorry, couldn't help myself). What it usually means is after Labour Day, the tourists go home, the gardens begin to get harvested, the Fall Fair will be happening!, and the number of meetings will increase. However, this year it has not mattered one bit.. I saw no slow down whatsoever in the number of meetings, the number of issues and the days required to represent you properly. So what's the difference? Summer slides into fall and then winter is upon us. The ol' circle keeps on turning. (let's hope so anyway! .. just a bit slower).
BC Ferries update
Most of my report will be about our favourite issue here on the islands: BC Ferries! They have taken up most of my time this summer. I have been doing quite a bit of big city media lately on the topic on CBC, CKNW, CFAX and our very own Campbell River station "The River". Lots of interest by the media in the events that we have been taking part in as local government representatives.
I have mentioned the coastal regional district chairs alliance, of which I am a part as the Vice- Chair of the SRD (see previous reports). We have met a few times and met with the Minister and met with the Commissioner and will meet again on Sept. 2nd in Nanaimo and then again with the Minister and the Premier at the Union of BC Municipalities on Sept. 26 or 27. We are in the process of developing a position paper for the Premier and the Minister, which I still must edit tonight! Yikes!. Anyway, it is a very exciting time. the pressure is on the government to do something. And hopefully it will be the right thing and put the ferries back into the Ministry of Transportation and Highways and treat them for what they are: our marine highway and fund them accordingly.
The Big meeting - Sept. 26th (that is in your calendar, right?)
Don't forget your obligation to attend the Sept. 26th meeting with the Commissioner right here on Quadra Island at 7 pm at the Community Centre (and on Cortes earlier that day). As I have mentioned before I will be in Vancouver meeting with the Minister and the Premier, so it is up to each of you to make the case for getting what we need. I am depending on you. You are depending on me to represent your views at the highest levels and I am depending on you to back me up here at home. This is what a good local community relationship looks like. We are the government. So let them know that loud and clear.
And now I am going to give you a break and end my report here. There are lots of other issues to talk about, but let's take full advantage of the last days of summer and get out there with family and friends and enjoy! There will be plenty of time to deal with all of the other "stuff" that is coming our way soon enough. One day at a time and summers are so short. So, I will say it again.. Enjoy!
Feel free to call me between the hours of 8:30 am and 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday (please, not on weekends, folks!) at 285-3355, or you can fax me at 285-3533 or you can email me anytime at jimabramxplornet.ca , or by mail at Box 278 in the Cove, V0P 1N0... Lots of choices.
Please note my new email address. I am still getting emails at the old address which is no longer active.
