The very large beaver pond on the way to Eagle Bluff drained last week and did a fair amount of landscape modification on the way to Whalebone Bay. It makes for an interesting short hike. The failed dam is located on the SW corner of the drained pond, about 300m of bushwhacking from where the trail first reaches the, now drained, pond. Why the dam suddenly failed now is not obvious, the beavers may simply have become too ambitious, or may have lacked the necessary geotechnical training.
