“It’s been more than twenty years since a Regional Director has visited the plant and I can’t tell you the impact this simple gesture has had on our employees” said Cam Pirie, General Manager of Walcan Seafood during a recent visit with Regional Director Area C candidate, Shawn O’Connor.
Walcan is the largest employer on Quadra Island, with a staff of approximately 155, many of whom are local Island residents. O’Connor spoke to workers about the need to balance resource extraction with environmental considerations and the importance of planning for young families and seniors. “Vibrant communities require programming and services that support multi-generational populations. We are failing our residents and until we address issues like affordable housing, young families will have no alternative but to leave. We simply must do better” encouraged O’Connor.
Elections are scheduled for Saturday, November 19th at Quadra Elementary School. Voter’s information can be found on the Strathcona Regional District website or by visiting voteforshawnoconnorhotmail.ca . -30-

... to a fish processing facility by someone who runs a shellfish company? What's the big deal?

Unfortunately, the information provided in this article is incorrect.
As Director, I have been to Walcan on a number of occasions and have been there for them in there bid to the Province to expand the size of the operation and in their bid to change their Waste Management Permit to allow for greater quantities of discharge. I have also been there on unofficial visits
I have always supported Walcan and Walcan workers.
