A growing group of Quadra Islanders met for the second time at the Community Centre on June 11 to discuss a number of community issues. Everyone present was interested in seeing enhanced supportive and healthy life situations for our older community members. There was also recognition in our group of the difficulties facing many younger islanders. However, promotion of the general health, fitness and social aliveness of all Quadra Islanders seemed to be at the centre of our collective psyche.
Karen Gair presented a detailed report on her careful research related to establishing some form of “Meals on Wheels” program for Quadra Islanders.
Affordable housing and strata-type housing were also discussed, and we heard news from several people who have been involved in other Q. I. planning groups who are working on appropriate housing solutions for our community. Work is being done to survey the needs of islanders.
Annie Strong reported on work done by one of our subcommittees whose task it has been to generate ideas for involving Quadra Islanders in socially enjoyable activities, both physical and cerebral. There seems to be no lack of ideas in this group. This subcommittee is working toward implementing some of these ideas.
We’ve taken the adventurous step of booking space at the Community Centre on the third Monday of each month from September through December. The time slots are as follows: 11:00 – 12:00 noon Rm. #1 for meeting (continued evolution and planning); 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. main hall for exercising, eating, visiting and playing. All Quadra Islanders will be welcome in both the morning and the afternoon gatherings. The hall ($40.00 per month) will be paid from donations (and perhaps purchases of coffee and goodies) made by those attending. Currently, there is room for expansion into other time slots at the Hall, but no plans have been finalized.
There are still two planning meetings scheduled before the Sept. startup date. These meetings will take place on Monday July 9, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Room #1 at the Community Centre and Monday, Aug. 13 at the same time and place. We’ll make coffee. If you think you might be interested but need more information, please call Wayne at 285-3264 or Lynda at 285-3205, or one of the people mentioned in this article.
Come out and join us on Monday July 9th at 9:30 a.m at your Community Centre.
