The New Year began with good news for closed containment salmon farming development. Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Keith Ashfield announced an $800,000 investment in the K’udas Land-Based Atlantic Salmon Recirculation Aquaculture System Pilot Project planned for northern Vancouver Island.
The ‘Namgis First Nation have been vocal in their condemnation of the open net-cage salmon farming industry in their territory and is building this facility to prove that salmon can be farmed commercially on land without risk to the wild marine environment. The project will develop incrementally to commercial scale, determining best practices in the process. The facility will initially grow 300 tonnes of Atlantic salmon per year expanding to 1000 tonnes over time. The first harvest is due in September 2013.
