Are you ready for a different sort of solitude? Steven Page, the legendary singer-songwriter, guitarist and co-founder of the six-time-Juno-award-winning, Grammy-nominated, Canadian band, The Barenaked Ladies, is giving a solo concert on Quadra Island, Saturday, March 10th at 8:00 pm, at the Quadra Community Centre. Tickets are $20, available at Hummingbird Office and Art Supply on Quadra and at the Music Plant in Campbell River.
Known for his intelligent, heart-felt lyrics and his up-beat song writing, this son of a drummer and father of three, has been expressing his unique personality and cutting sense of humour with a big voice for the past thirty years. Since re-directing his career in 2009, he has been playing solo acoustic shows, sometimes with cellist Kevin Fox, sometimes with the Art of Time Ensemble and sometimes with a full back-up band. Page continues to compose new material, available on his most recently recorded solo album, “Page One,” released in 2010. This mix of power-pop, disco, big band Jazz and folk he describes as “...a genre-hopping tribute to the music I love, and the music I grew up with.” He credits singer-songwriter Stephen Duffy as his song-writing hero and as co-writer, as well as singer-songwriter Craig Northey on some of the songs on this album.
Describing one of Page’s latest concert offerings Connie Phillips, writing for blogcritics.org/music wrote: “In the near two hours Page performed, he delivered a good chunk of the new album; treated us to a few well-chosen covers; and, yes, spattered in some of those classics. But one thing was evidently clear from note one: this night wasn't going to be a heart-warming stroll down memory lane, it was about fresh starts and a new lease. With the strong voice and crystal clear tone that drew me to this artist years ago, he sang of facing life's changes head on.”
Eclectic and deeply engaged in his personal musical journey, Page was just nominated for a Genie Award for his 2012 song “A Different Sort of Solitude” which he wrote and composed for the new Kevin Tierney film “French Immersion.” This year also sees Page composing music (the third time) for the Stratford Theatre, for their 2012 production of “Cymbeline.” Other recent events include touring with the Goo Goo Dolls on their Canadian tour and joining The Art of Time Ensemble, for their program "Take This Waltz," an exploration of the waltz throughout the last 150 years.
Steven Page’s discography includes 13 full-length recordings from his 20+ years with the Barenaked Ladies and more recently: The Vanity Project 2005, A Singer Must Die (with the Art of Time Ensemble) 2010, Page One 2010, and A Different Sort of Solitude 2012. About “Page One” John Lammers, of the Post Standard, Syracuse, N.Y. wrote: “... the new record is great. A gorgeous-sounding grownup record that grows more engaging as you unravel the lyrics. It's a big leap forward from the BNL days. Truly one of the best discs of this year.”
