Can it be? We've been doing this for fifteen years? Well, it's only one day out of the whole year, now, isn't it? So come on out on Sunday April 22 and pitch in!
Unfortunately, there's a fair lot of pitching to be done – more and more plastic (okay, and tires and styrofoam too) is/are washing up on our shores as time goes by. But don't be getting all blue! This community has been coming together for years around this time to make our beaches squeaky clean again.
There's lots of ways you can help. Come to Rebecca Spit at 10 am on Sunday April 22nd and grab a garbage bag or two. Believe me, we've got lots. Or you can bring previously-picked-up flotsam to the Sierra Beach Clean-up tent at the Spit. Or you can collect beach junk at any of these locations: the beach accesses at Smith Road, Milford Road, Edgeware Road or Petroglyph Road; the north end of the Kay Dubois Trail on Wa Wa Kie Beach Road; and the south end of the Kay Dubois Trail on Sutil Road.
Now for some good news: You don't have to do this just for the fun of it – we reward you with food. Yummy hot soup courtesy of Kameleon Restaurant (big thanks, Danielle) and hot dogs (it's a beach cleanup tradition) and great baking and juice and tea and coffee await you at the Cleanup tent from noon to 3pm. So don't be shy. Pick garbage, then eat. What better way to celebrate Earth Day?
Bring your family, friends, and favourite people. It all wraps up by 4 in the afternoon.
