Thinking about Mom's Books, Willow Point Used Books, Still Water Books and Art, Coho Books, and Silvia's Book Aisle in Save-On-Foods, I am taking the liberty of asking readers to consider helping to keep local bookshops alive. There is a great poster on this site
. Editor's note: See the Literary Tourist website at http://nigelbeale.com/
I'd love to talk to you about the situation here in Campbell River. Guests (tourists) are thrilled and surprised that our town has so much to offer in terms of books. As you know we have lots of local authors and now a couple of publishing companies as well.
When we began Words on the Water there was lots of skepticism that our little primary industry city would support high level literacy efforts. Literary Arts have flourished. Well, we are on year twelve with Riverites' wonderful support. And, local bookstores are a vanishing breed – elsewhere! But we need readers' continued support.
Children's book illustrator Sam Zappardi created the poster linked above. He puts out the call for the June 16 event, Buy a Real Book In a Real Bookstore
: “All you have to do is head into town on June 16th and pick up a few books from somewhere other than the internet. There’s nowt like a good browse, after all.”
