On Friday, Dec. 7 at 7:45, Friday Flicks presents Salmon Fishing in the Yemen at Quadra Community Centre.
Huh? What? Impossible!
That’s the reaction of fisheries expert Dr. Alfred Jones when a PR consultant tells him that billionaire Sheikh Muhammad wants to bring fly-fishing to the desert – at any cost. But the British PM considers the idea of shipping 10,000 North Atlantic salmon to Yemen a useful distraction from the nasty business in the Middle East. He enlists his tough spokeswoman, to make it happen.
This is a rich subject, filled with delicious nuggets about Western capitalism at war with Muslim culture. Director Lasse Hallström clearly appreciates the Sheikh’s dream of using fishing to unite the people of Yemen across sect and class. Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt have charm to spare and the no-bull instinct to cut to the heart of a scene. In the Dead Sea scrolls of Hollywood formula, their film is a distinct delight, brimming over with spirit and surprise.
“Expect an enjoyable, reasonably grown-up charm offensive that’s not quite of this planet and you won’t be disappointed.” (Ken Eisner, Georgia Straight)
