On January 25 at 7:45 at Quadra community Centre Friday Flicks presents Chasing Ice.
Two decades ago, geographer James Balog couldn't wrap his head around global warming. The threat was too abstract, and the science too dependent on computer-model analysis. As a photographer he doesn't think that way anymore. After an eye-opening 2005 visit to Iceland, Balog initiated the Extreme Ice Survey expedition, traversing the Arctic capturing records of the world’s receding ice sheet. Filmmaker Jeff Orlowski followed.
It’s a region Balog calls "insanely, ridiculously beautiful," a phrase that Orlowski's images fully justify. Stunning cinematography and privileged views of Arctic areas never seen before make CHASING ICE an engrossing chronicle of one man’s quest to reveal crucial evidence of the damage we have wrought.
CHASING ICE is the story of a visionary artist who, in facing his own mortality, bequeaths the magic of the Arctic to the next generation, by capturing visual proof of climate change on the planet today.
