The old addage" eat fish live longer and eat oysters love longer" is holding true to scientific investigation.oysters mussels scallops crab and shrimp, contain selenium which stimulates metabolism and immune systems and reduces damage of free radicals.
There is also clear evidence that omega 3 polyunsaturates originating from plankton via zooplankton digested by fish and shellfish, helps reduce the risk of heart disease, making the blood less likely to clot and block blood vessels. Evidence suggests certain omegas help reduce blood pressure and keep the heart healthy by reducing triglycerides, blood fats and possibly cholesterol. Limited evidence suggests omega 3 can help combat depression and schizophrenia and aid in nerve and eyesight development, and help to relieve arthritis. Humans need cholestoral an important component of human cell development.
High blood cholestorol has become a problem for many people and can lead to a variety of health problems such as coronary heart disease. Most meats, eggs, and shellfish are comparatively high in cholesterol receiving lots of negative publicity.
The human body produces cholesterol from saturated fats, evidence shows dietary cholesterol does not necessarily become cholesterol in the blood. The cause of high cholesterol is in other words not a diet high in cholesterol but a diet high in saturated fats, which the body itself turns into cholesterol in the blood.
Shellfish are very low in fat. The importance and benefits of a low fat diet have only come to be fully realised over the last twenty years or so. Shellfish have long been recognised as being benificial to good health, vey rich in vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, D, E, minerals calcium, copper, iodine, iron, potassium, selenium, and zinc.
Some people suffer from seafood allergies: this is an unfortunate fact of life. Often the allergies are very specific and caused by one type of seafood only, the causative allergins are not affected by cooking so the only treatment is avoidence of the known shellfish.
All commercially harvested shellfish are subject to strict hygiene regulations. Water samples are taken regularly and tested for PSP. Monitoring programs cover all areas of harvest and insure rigid guidelines set by Fisheries and growers to protect consumers.
Wel,l not only do we have the finest seafood on the coast but they very well may improve our health, sure beats the high price of vitamin supplements. Enjoy!
