"ART IN MOTION"
Bodypainting by Cathy Corbett with photography by Galinski
September 7th - September 29th, 2007.

Meet the artists and a live painted model at a reception on September 14th from 6 – 8 p.m. Children and adults can also have their faces painted by Cathy and her Magical Faces crew on September 29th from 11 – 4pm cost is only $5.00 – mark your calendar.

Cathy has been an artist for over 12 years and happened to stumble onto the amazing world of Body and Face Painting Art while vacationing in New Brunswick. The painted faces of the children there at the zoo inspired her successful business Magical Faces, and her smiling clients are adults as well as kids.

She has embarked upon a personal journey of discovery and expression, participating in such competitions as Colour Mundo in Montreal this past April, the upcoming Body Gras Bodypainting Championship in Nanaimo September 22, and the Orlando Face Painting and Body Convention this coming January. Even with all these achievements Cathy feels the biggest accomplishment she obtains from the incredible world of face and body painting art is her personal “satisfaction seeing the look within the eyes of a child” she has just painted. She says the joy they express goes beyond words and fuels her inner strength for her to continue painting.

Currently, body painting art has been described as the ultimate fantasy game where one becomes a creature and plays the role for a day. Advertisements and commercials also offer painted figures blending into images of a tree in order to sell a car for example, or more gastronomic ideals of draping oneself over a piece of cheesecake, becoming one with the chocolate sauce with expertly applied paint.
We have been extending the human body beyond its physical limitation with illusion for millennia. The longer history of our story includes almost all cultures around the world adorning bodies with pigment. People have embellished their bodies for many reasons. This art form allows for the expression of universal and culture specific feelings and emotions whether it symbolizes a belonging to or being apart from others. Spiritual rituals and initiations often rely on this transformative process in order to assist in altering perceptions that the human form is just that. It can provide a protective covering or empowering coating for the person who has become the art. Various pigments have been applied to skin to celebrate occasions of transitions such as weddings, or provide protection from spiritual danger as used in some funeral rites.

The human body is a unique canvas. Painting ourselves is a way of signaling an individual's place in society, marking a special moment and celebrating a transition in life. Our bodies become an original work of art in motion.
