Imagine yourself in Paris, in the early 1900s, drinking coffee at your favourite cafe or sipping wine in an after-hours jazz club. Now add a sound track celebrating Paris—the romantic inspiration of Europe—supplied by Duo Rendezvous (Canadians, violinist Jasper Wood and guitarist Daniel Bolshoy.) Then relax and enjoy a program featuring such composers as Ravel, Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla, Gershwin, da Falla and Django Reinhardt....complete with entertaining stories and dazzling musical virtuosity, Duo Rendezvous will transport you to this romantic time and place on Sunday, April 21 at 7:00 PM at the Quadra Community Centre.
Duo Rendezvous was formed as a response to a demand for refreshing and passionate chamber ensembles. Highly acclaimed solo performers each, as well as professors of music at UBC, Jasper Wood and Daniel Bolshoy, enrich the existing guitar and violin repertoire with their own transcriptions of worldly masterpieces as well as newly commissioned pieces by leading Canadian composers.
Daniel Bolshoy, guitarist, ambassador of the Arts and passionate music educator, is known for his impressive technique, his fine musicality and his engaging stage presence. He has performed as soloist with symphony orchestras around the world including in the US, Europe, Israel, Russia and Mexico. He has participated in seven CD recordings and two documentary films. Classical guitarist, Ricardo Iznaola, wrote of Bolshoy: “Concert presenters and guitar lovers in general must take note of the emerging figure of this exciting and expressive young guitar virtuoso....with his brilliant technique and passionate temperament [he] promises to become a major figure of the international guitar scene.”
Another emerging talent of his generation, violinist Jasper Wood, is developing a reputation as a soloist with major orchestras in North America and Europe. He has been awarded both the Sylva Gelber Prize (1996) and the prestigious Virginia Parker Award (2004) from the Canada Council for the Arts. Wood’s performances have been described by The Strad as having a “...thrilling virtuosity” and as achieving “...open luminous tones, seamless lines and impeccable technique.” (Toronto Star). His 2013 recording as violinist with piano trio Triple Forte (with David Jalbert and Yegor Dyachkov) was nominated for a Juno award as Classical Album of the Year.
Between them Wood and Bolshoy have recorded nearly twenty solo and chamber music CDs.
