Being without a vehicle isn't easy on Quadra.Attending activities, grocery-shopping or getting to medical appointments here or in Campbell River is difficult for many of our seniors. Some don't drive or don't feel able to for various reasons. As well, for people with disabilities or recovering from illness or surgery, driving may not be an option; even getting on and off the ferry as a foot passenger is not possible for some. People can become more isolated or may cut down on necessities if they have to always rely on family or friends.

Seniors Transportation InitiativeQuadra Circle is pleased to offer a new transportation option thanks to a Community Wellness grant from the Vancouver Island Health Authority, facilitated through the Strathcona Regional District by our Area Rep, Jim Abram. Quadra Circle's new transportation program is currently exploring two ways to make transportation available at a reasonable cost. Firstly, we will be working with Quadra Taxi to look at the possibility of subsidising fares and of their running a van service. They could, for instance, run weekly trips from Heriot Bay or the south end of the Island to the Cove for shopping, banking medical appointments etc. or pick up people wanting to go to community events. Secondly, we are seeking volunteers to give rides on and off Quadra and will connect them with those who need rides. Payment of mileage for volunteers is an option.

Right now we need to hear from you.Are you interested in helping our subcommittee design the Seniors Transportation Initiative? Do you have suggestions to give us based on your transportation needs? Maybe you want to volunteer as a driver, or would like to use the service when it starts? Do you have neighbours or family who would appreciate this program? To give us your in-put, please call Karen at 285-3066 or Maureen at 285-2221.

Quadra Home Meals Just a reminder that our Home Meals program runs through the summer. Island seniors or caregivers unable to cook regularly and anyone dealing with illness can order these tasty, nutritious meals, provided by Gowlland Harbour Resort at a nominal cost of $5 per meal. Choices range from soup/stew with bun, to a small entree to a full meal with fish/meat, vegetables and a starch. Food preferences, allergies and special diets can be accommodated. Meals can be reheated or frozen for later use. You can pick them up at the QCC on Wednesdays between 11:15am and 12:30pm. If needed, the meals can be delivered by our volunteers. Just call Lynda: 285-3205, Karen: 285-3064 or Marie: 285-3950 to order the meals by Sunday noon.
