Hey, it's Canada Day! We're 146 years young, with amazing things to celebrate – plus a few wrinkles we're still ironing out from the fabric of that long-ago idea called confederation.
The sun is finally making a reappearance after a monsoon-ish week here on the island, and this is what's shakin':
Saturday June 29: Quadra Bikes is wrapping up 30 Days of Pedal Power with a family dance and celebration at 7:30 at the Quadra Community Centre Saturday night. Shane Philip, multi-instrumentalist and totally awesome guy, is performing with special guests The Whole Sh'bang. In addition to fabulous music the event also promises prizes, draws, and all-around good times. Tickets are $10 at the door and $25 for families.
The Quadra Market is another venue for fine island music this Saturday. On June 29 come and browse the market to the sounds of Hal Douglas and his homegrown jazzy blues.
On Monday July 1 in Quathiaski Cove Market the island's traditional Canada Day events start at 4 in the afternoon: opening ceremonies on stage, singing of Oh Canada, speeches, RCMP in official red serge, and the famous Canada Day Cake Contest – yes, we get to have our cake and eat it too! Live music and entertainment abounds: The Whole Sh'bang, Quadra Belly Dancers, Go Dog Go, The Unexpected, Duffy Live, Quadra Dog Show and Agility, Rumour Has It, Jules Frank, Marnie Younger, Hal Douglas Blues Band, Jaci McPhee, and more!
The Children's Festival will be in full swing from 4pm on with BounceRama, and all the games, bubbles, and face painting you can fit into a Canada Day afternoon.
So come on out, Quadra, and let's wish Canada a Happy Birthday!
