Having just returned last night from meetings in Victoria, this report will need to be a brief overview of events that have taken place since the last report. The deadline for submission is now!
Fall Fair and Quadrapalooza
This community deserves a huge thank you for two wonderful events within seven days of each other. On Labour Day weekend, three days of music, art and various talents came together at Quadrapalooza and was largely the work of the younger crowd here on the island (and from other areas). They did an incredible job of organizing and running the event. The festival gets bigger and better every year and brings an incredible array of talent to the island.
The Fall Fair was amazing! My entire family had a great time viewing the exhibits and partaking in the many activities that so many volunteers spent so much time organizing. It was a huge success and I am looking forward to next years' event. We have such an incredibly talented collection of individuals and a very capable group of organizers and volunteers. I am sure that the work for next years' fair has already started! Congratulations to one and all! There was something for everyone and the weather could not have been better.
Quathiaski Cove Sewer District and expanded area meeting
On Sept. 25th, at 7pm, at the Community Centre, there will be an information meeting for the residents of the Q. cove Sewer Service Area and the residents of the proposed expansion to the area. This is an extremely important meeting and for the people who are being considered in the expansion area, the meeting is crucial. The costs of joining the sewer have come way, way down and those residents will need to see the details to understand what is being offered. At the meeting, staff will also explain the Development Cost charge bylaw that may apply to subdivision proposals in the future. Those funds will go directly back into the service area to help keep the costs down for capital and operations in the future. This is a very important meeting and I encourage everyone involved with this service and expansion to attend. All appropriate SRD staff will be on hand to present information and to answer questions.
Meeting with Telus
My meeting with Telus in Victoria went very well. Quadra Island is definitely on their radar. We discussed all of the options that are possibly available to us and discussed the technology advances and what will and won't work. I am in conversation with the Regional District and the BC Assessment Authority right now to determine the actual number of houses on Quadra at this time. Our planners are being very cooperative and understand how important this issue is to the island. Future improvements were discussed all of which depend on many outside influences. I will update you as I receive more information.
A number of meetings have been scheduled for the UBCM convention to deal with our issues. First on the list deal with the subject of connectivity and Telus. I have had confirmation that I will be meting with GoBC and NetWorkBC to discuss the above topic. They are the ones that liaise directly with service providers and also provide funding in certain cases. I will also be meeting with the Minister of Technology who is responsible for connectivity. This is very good news, in my view.
Other meetings include the Minister of Community, Sport and Culture (our local government Minster) to discuss connectivity, ferries and the Crown referral process regarding proposals that continually cause us grief at the local level. I will be meeting with the Ministry of Transportation regarding all of our road issues that are not being funded by the Ministry to the degree that they should be.
Of special note, I will also be meeting, along with the Coastal Regional District Chairs Group, with the Premier and the Minster of Transportation to discuss our favourite topic: Ferries!
I will be leaving for UBCM on Sunday, Sept. 15th and returning on Saturday, Sept. 21st. It is going to be a long, eventful week and hopefully a very productive one. I will still be reachable by cell and by email.
There are numerous other meetings planned on single issue topics and I will report back after the conference.
The next two days will be spent in intensive Board and Committee meetings as well as the CVRD Waste Management Board and the Regional Hospital Board. I will also be meeting with my advisory group tomorrow night after the Board meetings.
So, that is about it for now.
