Claire Trevena, MLA
The Legislature in Victoria got back to work this week with a number of serious issues under discussion.

On Monday, the Tsawwassen Treaty was introduced. This is the first modern urban treaty. It is based on the Nisga’a treaty, negotiated by the NDP and was brought into being through the BC Treaty Process, also developed by the NDP.

Claire spoke in the debate, praising the Tsawwassen people for their hard work, patience and decision but raising concerns about the slowness of the treaty process and the number of First Nations still without treaty.

Her speech can be found at: http://www.leg.bc.ca/hansard/38th3rd/h71017p.htm#8597

On Tuesday, Shelagh Germyn finished her remarkable Million Steps for Childcare at the Legislature. Claire joined with childcare workers on the steps of the house to welcome her and then welcomed her formally in the House. http://www.leg.bc.ca/hansard/38th3rd/h71016p.htm#8542

Claire also used the opportunity to talk about the Million Steps and the urgent need for childcare http://www.leg.bc.ca/hansard/38th3rd/h71016p.htm#8544 .

Debate also started on Bill 29, the Adult Guardianship Bill. Claire raised some concerns and was able to question the Attorney General. http://www.leg.bc.ca/hansard/38th3rd/H71018a.htm#8628

And Claire was able to welcome to the House Alana Check, the teacher at Echo Bay, http://www.leg.bc.ca/hansard/38th3rd/H71018p.htm#8631 who was in Victoria learning ways of making democracy and the legislature relevant to her students.
