Update on government funding for Literacy

Today the Minister of Education awarded an additional $1 million for literacy outreach coordination for the 2013-14 fiscal year. To be clear, this is the fiscal year that is over on Monday. This $1 million dollars is to reinstate the funding loss in each community’s literacy coordination budget.

We are very grateful that the Ministry is supplying another $1 million dollars for the very important and effective work being done by literacy task groups and coordinators. However, it is not quite enough to cover last year’s amounts to all communities. In addition, it does not allow for any funding to Decoda for the supports that they provide. Decoda Literacy Solutions has been able to make up these differences for the last two years, but are not in a position to do that this year.

It is also important to understand that funding for literacy outreach coordination is not yet identified in the 2014-15 budget. This is very important as we look to the future. Estimate debates about the 2014-15 budget are currently taking place, and there is a possibility that funding for community literacy coordination can still be put into that budget.
