We're excited about receiving a New Horizons for Seniors grant funded by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada for our volunteer development project! We're now setting up our Community Connection Centre in “the Cubby” (beside Quadra Medical 's office) in the Cove Centre. Thank you to Cove Centre owners, Kim Zapshala and Ed Fisher, for generously donating part of our rent.
The Community Connections Centre will be open 11am-3pm, Wednesday through Saturday and staffed by a volunteer Coordinator. People who want services and information and those who want to volunteer can drop in and learn what is available on Quadra. We will recruit, screen, train and supervise the volunteers, linking them with all the volunteer opportunities in our community, such as Quadra Circle programs, Fall Fair, Quadra Children's Centre, Quadra Trails Committee, ESS, Quadra Rec Centre, etc. We'll provide information of interest to seniors, their families and the general public on topics such as local home maintenance services, social activities, government services for seniors, wills and estate planning, etc. Partnering with Quadra Elementary School, we will also arrange for Quadra seniors and other volunteers to provide educational talks, experiences and mentoring to classes and individual children. The school principal and staff are enthusiastic about this new inter-generational program. We hope our Community Connections Centre project will be a win-win for both volunteers who want rewarding experiences and the organizations who need skilled, motivated helpers. Watch for news on our official Open House later in April. Contact: Karen: 285-3064.
