The long winter is over, and now it’s time for fun in the sun. But how can we be sun safe and non-toxic at the same time? Look for lotion or cream products that contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which offer broad spectrum protection. However don’t use the spray-on versions: spraying on sun screen results in uneven coverage, and these chemicals are safe to wear but not so safe to inhale. Skip the perfumed products, and avoid oxybenzone and vitamin A, which may be more harmful than helpful. Above all, reapply: just because the SPF is high, doesn’t mean you can stay out all day without getting burned. For more info about sun screen, check out the new EWG sun screen guide, and for chemicals to avoid in all personal care products, including sun screen, check out our web resources.
