Campbell River Art Gallery
Artisan demos are a very special feature of Campbell River Art Gallery’s Christmas Arts and Crafts Market. On Saturday December 15th from 1 pm- 3 pm, please join the gallery staff and volunteers welcome woodcrafter Duane Noyes to the gallery. Noyes will be demonstrating his personal carving techniques on wood he has rescue from various places around B.C.
Noyes is a retired logger and has spent most of his life around trees. He got his start as a carver in logging camps, where, in their spare time he and his father both worked with cast-off wood from the trees they fell. All the wood Noyes uses has been reclaimed: in other words, it has been rescued from an inglorious fate to proudly reside in his handcrafted trinkets.
Noyes is continually searching for wood to rescue from places such as sawmill burn piles, logging camps, construction sites, garage sales, flea markets and garbage dumps. Once rescue this wood is intricately transformed into beautifully designed wooden boxes, games and other wooden structures.
Noyes’s demo is part of the ongoing Christmas Arts and Crafts Market, which features the work of 88 local artisans in a classy boutique. “The talent of all the local artisans in the Christmas Market is outstanding, says gallery assistant Leslie Quilter. New to the Christmas market is potter Christine Husson from Quadra Island. Husson’s pottery is functional and decorative and she always strives to explore and play with new shapes and decorations to keep her work lively, shapely and colourful. Drop by the gallery to check out Husson's pottery as well as many other wonderful displays.
The Christmas Market continues until December 24 and is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is located downtown Campbell River, in the Tyee Plaza. Call 287-2261 for more information or check the Gallery’s website at www.craartgallery.ca.
The next artisan demo takes place on December 22 at 1p.m. when Tamara Tuff , a newcomer to the Christmas Market, will demonstrate techniques for her youthful line of jewelry.
