The Quadra Island Recreation Society's Community Kitchen Lunch is an entirely volunteer driven community-building initiative. Every year from September to May some 100-150 odd community members from all walks of life are served vegetables, deserts, delicious homemade soups and breads once a week. The lunch is by donation so that anyone can attend no matter his or her financial abilities. The Community Kitchen welcomes all walks of life to gather together, rich or poor, and in so doing helps to build a community that is inclusive of all, it also directly helps those in need by having the option of getting a wholesome hot meal once a week throughout the fall, winter and spring.

With one hundred plus people being served soup once a week throughout the rainy season, approximately 3100 bowls of soup are served to the public per year. So, since inception, that makes approximately 34100 hot meals served up by community members for community members, and that’s no small feat!

There are many aspects involved in organizing this program. It all starts out in the Recreation Society’s office with the coordinators spearheading the initiative, taking on the background planning, volunteer recruitment and placement, and then it branches out into volunteer organizers and planners taking on the initiative. There are volunteer: shoppers, bakers, prep cooks, cooks, a treasurer, dish collectors, dish scrapers, dishwashers, volunteers who do table set up and take down and volunteer musicians who play the piano for the lunch goers. We even have a volunteer who takes home and washes all of the 20 plus tablecloths each week (when available).

On any given day there will be: grandparents with their grandchildren, new moms and babies, retired people, workers on their lunch breaks, and friends of new and old acquaintance. The Community Lunch is one of the best places to make new friends and meet your neighbours. If a person is new to the island it becomes a welcoming place to meet people and join the community.
