Sierra Quadra + Aquarium
Quadra’s Annual Beach Cleanup – yes, number 18! – is happening on Sunday, April 26th. Headquarters is midway along Rebecca Spit, and the event runs from 10am to 2pm. Look for our kitchen tent where a hot lunch and innumerable goodies – and live music too – await our beach garbage hunters. Participants can chow down from 11am to 2pm.
Garbage bags, if needed, can be picked up here. Collected beach garbage can be delivered to the parking lot nearby or dropped off up until 1pm at any of the collection sites on the island, all of which will shortly be identified by nifty little signs (in case the growing piles of collected garbage don’t do the trick). These locations are:
• End of Petroglyph Road
• North end of Sutil Road at Kay Dubois Trail
• South end of We Wai Kai Road at Kay Dubois Trail
• Smith Road beach access
• Edgeware Road beach access
• Milford Road beach access
• Rebecca Spit, Main Parking Lot
• Rebecca Spit, South-East Parking Lot
• Rebecca Spit, centre by narrow isthmus
• Open Bay area at Valdez and Marina Roads
The event this year spans the entire week prior to our local Earth Day clean-up, beginning on April 19th for the most enthusiastic of debris collectors. Please join us and the hordes of Islanders of all ages who participate year after year. Thanks to our collective efforts, tonnes of discarded material that wash up on our beaches are moved to safe storage. Not only does this beautify our beaches but we’re removing plastics — the majority of this mess — that break down and compromise our wellbeing and that of our marine ecosystem.
See you on Sunday April 26th at the Spit!
