Theatre Quadra
In June Quadra Island will be treated to something new: Take Ten – Quadra Island’s Festival of Short Plays. Take Ten encompasses three days, 15 plays, over 50 cast and crew members and two venues. It includes performances for various audiences, ranging from an “adult oriented” evening Friday June 12 to a dinner theatre evening Saturday June 13, and a family-friendly afternoon matinee on Sunday June 14.

Take Ten - Quadra Island’s Festival of Short Plays is presented and produced by Quadra’s intrepid, hard-working Theatre Quadra. “We believe that a short play festival is an ideal way of encouraging both new and experienced actors, writers and directors to get involved with community theatre,” explained Darcy Mitchell, one of the festival’s organizers. “The cast and crew time commitment for one of these ‘mini-plays’ is much less than for a full length production.” And, added Mitchell, “if "Take Ten" is well received this year, we see lots of potential for expanding partnerships with other performing arts groups and local businesses to make the festival a real draw for visitors during the spring 'shoulder season’." Which grows another benefit for our island community.

Take Ten plays average (surprise!) ten minutes, offering a veritable smorgasbord of theatrical snacks. “Don’t like one play? Wait a few minutes and another comes along,” said Mitchell. Plays include those by well-known writers such as David Ives and Christopher Durang, as well as plays by

Quadra writers (Michael Redican, Allen Perkins, Doni Laird, Darcy Mitchell, Ruby Mooney and Chris Thompson). Performers range in age from six to 65.

As with all major endeavours, Take Ten has been brewing for some time; the organizing committee has been hard at work for months. Now it’s time for the audience to play along: buy tickets! Come out and support the local arts scene! Take Ten begins Friday June 12 at the Quadra Community Centre.

Saturday June 13 is “three courses, three plays” at the Heriot Bay Inn. The festival wraps up Sunday June 14 with a family-friendly matinee at the Quadra Community Centre.

Tickets for all events are available for purchase through the Heriot Bay Inn by calling 250.285.3322. Savings can be had by snatching up the earlybird ticket pricing available until May 31, or purchasing a package pass which includes all three events for $60.
