Another beautiful, sunny day for us to enjoy! We must be doing something right (I hope!).

I am just going to dive into this since I have a lot of issues to bring to your attention and little time to do it in. I am already past deadline!

First of all, coming back from a holiday is a nightmare with all of the “things” that have piled up. I am still a long way from catching up, so please be patient.

Wow! What a day.. 117th Mayday and still going strong with a huge crowd and great weather. The highlight of course was the dedication of the 2015 Mayday to Sandy Spearing, our beloved coordinator of the Community Centre for 29 years. We wouldn’t have the recreation program and facility on this island that we have now without Sandy. And she has announced her retirement! I wish her all the best in her next projects, whatever they may be. She has been an invaluable asset to me and the community and the Regional District for all of these years. We will miss her!

Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM)

I will be attending this annual meeting in Edmonton, this year to learn from my colleagues across the country and to share our experiences. I already have meetings lined up with Federal officials including BC candidates in the next election and Justin Trudeau to talk about the absolute need to get our ferry system back into the Ministry. The FCM policy wholeheartedly endorses this position in their policy papers. Communications (Internet, cell/data, phone) will also be high on my priority list.

Marine Area Planning Partnership

There was a press release in the last DI announcing that this massive three year exercise was comp[let and signed off. What they forgot to mention was the valuable input from Local Government (5 of us in total over the years). I was there on your behalf for the entire time and got many things included that the Fed’s and Province would have rather ignored.

Another Ferry rally

On June 11th, in Parksville, there will be a visit by Christ Clark at a function there. Big time organization is taking place as I write and I am hoping the some car pooling will be arranged to have a Quadra contingent there. I only know that it is in the morning and I will update on FaceBook as I hear more. This is a multi issue rally and it will be big time and lots of media. Gather those signs and songs! I am unable to attend due to chairing two Board meetings that day, so I am hoping you will step up and represent us in my absence. For those of you following the ferry issue that effects all of our lives, you have probably noticed that we have kept it alive in the media on an almost daily basis. This issue is not going to go away until we win.

There is a huge effort taking place right now in Burnaby North to prove that a Liberal MLA can be recalled. If any of you have friends or relatives that want to help our cause and that live in the lower mainland, please see if they can help out with the work. Go to: … or you can call me for more details. They need help as they only have two weeks left to gather signatures. Let’s make this work and prove to the Liberals that they are not untouchable.

The Comox Valley Regional District Solid Waste function has been pressuring me for over a year to drastically change our recycling efforts here on Quadra. I have flat out refused much to their consternation. I finally forced a meeting with all of their top brass and invited our SRD CAO and my Alternate Director and facility operator to attend on site yesterday.. after an hour of discussion they left with a new outlook and are going to see if they can make my demands work, along with having the new private corporation that looks after recycling pay for the transportation to boot. That will save us about $25,000.00 per year. We’ll see what happens.

I met with the RCMP also yesterday about issues on Quadra. There are very few major issues. They informed me of their focus for the year and also gave me a second letter for the institution of a dog bylaw for Quadra. This discussion has been going on for more than a year. I now have two letters from two different heads of our detachment requesting the SRD to put a bylaw in place so they can enforce rules more effectively. The SRD is looking at this in this next year. The public (even the dog owners) and the Safety Council have been asking for this for some time. So it is time to at least look at it.

Local Area Plan - Seniors

I will be meeting with our CAO and seniors in the next month to really get moving on the much needed seniors facilities and other housing needs in our community. Funding has always been an issue and our CAO, in discussion with me, has agreed to look at creative ideas on how to get past this barrier. More to follow.

The SRD has adopted Connectivity and cell/data as a Strategic Priority and I plan to make e most of this to press the issue for Area C. We will be meeting with high level officials at the industry, provincial and federal level, including the CRTC in the near future. So wish us luck. We are going to put the full-court press on all of them.

Tyee Plaza parking

This came up while I was away and it means that there will no longer be overnight, free parking in the Plaza in CR. This is unacceptable and I am pursuing it with the necessary “parties”, who will remain nameless at this time.. I am hoping for a meeting on Thursday in CR and will keep you up to date.

Ambulance / Ferry issues

I have run out of time and space, so please read the CR Mirror this Wednesday for details.

I think I need to stop here, so I can get this to press. Feel free to call me between the hours of 8:30 am and 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday (please, not on weekends, folks!) at 285-3355, or you can fax me at 285-3533 or you can email me anytime at or by mail at Box 278 in the Cove, V0P 1N0… or on Facebook at…. If it is important, my cell is 250-830-8005… Lots of choices.

Please do not use my residential phone number for SRD calls. All business calls should be on 285-3355. Many thanks!

Respectfully submitted,

Jim Abram
