CAMPBELL RIVER – The safety of drivers on Highway 19 is being raised by North Island MLA, Claire Trevena.

Snow removal, black ice, hydroplaning and the damage done by logging trucks are some of the issues Trevena is raising.

“People are scared about driving the Inland Island Highway in poor weather and with fears about a regional hospital being located somewhere down that highway people are more acutely aware of the potential dangers,” said Trevena.

“We’ve got issues of safety all along Highway 19 and I would like the Campbell government to put a similar commitment to our highway as it’s putting into highways for the Olympics.”

Trevena has written to Minister of Transportation Kevin Falcon, asking him to look at three stretches of Highway 19: from Dove Creek through the Highway 28 turn off, from Menzies Bay to Sawyard, and from Woss to Port McNeill.

The standard of the road, snow clearance, and the heavy use by logging trucks are all factors in safety on the Highway.

Trevena has asked for a meeting with the Minister to try to find solutions to the various problems.
