As I write this report it is actually Labour Day. So my comments below will refer to this but be five days late when you read them! The following is what I wrote on Facebook regarding the holiday:

"Happy Labour Day weekend to everyone out there in the ether! I hope that you will all remember that this is not just another 3-day weekend. It is a holiday that celebrates Labour and what it has done for all of us historically: for us as individuals, for our families, for our society, provincially, nationally and globally. We enjoy many of the things we take for granted today due to organized Labour. Give a thought of thanks to those that have passed that were part of that movement and to all of those today that continue the struggle with the corporate world. Have a good one!"

Quathiaski Cove Sewer expansion

The past few weeks have been way beyond frustrating. A Request for Proposals was put out a couple of months ago for firms that would want to bid on the work. Of course it was all the bigger companies that bid and all at a premium price because “we live on an island”. My original wish was that the job would be done by companies here on Quadra, creating more work and keeping the money at “home”. Well, the bids that came in from the Vancouver Island firms were all unacceptable . All of them were way higher than was anticipated by the engineering firm that did all of the work for the SRD and quoted us what it should cost. They were wrong. Staff had conversations with the firms to see if they could lower their bid and that was fruitless. My wish was still to have Quadra people do the work. Eventually after many very tense meetings and calls and emails, staff cancelled the RFP bid and they now have the power to renegotiate the deal.

I am hoping that a consortium of Quadra companies will come together and make this project work. We need to get this done and over with and it is only going to happen if Quadra Islanders make it happen. So, I am throwing the idea out there and hope that it will take hold within the contractor community. I am certain that it can be done and will be glad to facilitate a meeting if that is desired. The start time has now been moved to the spring since we missed the Sept. / Oct. window due to the unforeseen hold-ups. So, let’s just say it has not been a happy time for me as your Director. However, I am confident Quadra Island businesses will come through as they always do.

Beach Accesses

I have mentioned this in previous reports, but I wanted to update you on the progress. I spent another full day with two staff beating through bushes to find some of the hidden accesses that were created through the subdivision process. So that makes two days so far with one more to go. We have been eliminating the impractical ones and mapping the others with GPS coordinates. we will then be talking with the Ministry of Transportation (who owns these accesses) to determine which ones they are willing to maintain and which ones that we will need to come to another arrangement on. Stay tuned! This is very exciting since we live on an island and should have the opportunity to access the water! This will help.

The other exciting part of this inventory work is that some of it is connecting up with existing trails and with the the new Bike Pathways proposal that I talked about in the last report. So it is going to help us out in many areas.

I am going to leave it at those two issues for now. Feel free to contact me between the hours of 8:30 am and 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday (please, not on weekends, folks!) at 285-3355, or you can fax me at 285-3533 or you can email me anytime at jimabramxplornet.ca or by mail at Box 278 in the Cove, V0P 1N0… or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JimAbram…. If it is important, my cell is 250-830-8005… Lots of choices.

Please do not use my residential phone number for SRD calls. All business calls should be on 285-3355. Many thanks!

Respectfully submitted,
