November 30 this year is a very important date. It marks the start of the Global Climate Summit, to be held in Paris, when leaders from around the world meet to forge a new climate plan, with the goal of decreasing global carbon emissions over the next twenty years and beyond. China and the US have already taken big steps towards curbing their emissions and expectations are high that the stage is set for a very successful outcome to negotiations.
To celebrate this hope and show their support, cities and communities around the world are holding rallies on Sunday, November 29. It will be the largest global climate mobilization in history and Campbell River is joining in the action! The Campbell River chapter of Council of Canadians and the Quadra Island chapter of Sierra Club are together organizing a ‘Support the Climate’ rally on November 29 at Spirit Square in Campbell River, beginning at 1pm. It won’t be a long event – it could be cold! – but it will be a fun event. There will be some songs and a short speech or two, maybe even a short march to keep warm! But mostly we encourage people and families to come and join us as we celebrate our hopes for the future. Bring your costumes, bring your signs, bring yourselves, bring your friends! We will take a grand photo of everyone, which will be posted alongside hundreds of others and shown at the Climate Summit in Paris. This is the time to stand up for the planet and a sustainable future for ourselves and all those living things with whom we share the earth! See you there at the Square!
