The Quadra Island Salmon Enhancement Society’s new Watershed Extension and Education Centre is nearing the point of being ready to officially open this coming summer. To celebrate, and to show the new Centre to all Quadra Islanders, an Open House is planned for February 23, 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM, at the Society’s facility on Hyacinthe Rd. Coffee and donuts, and weather permitting, BBQ’d hotdogs will be available.

The goal of the Centre is two fold: first, to explain to and remind us all that we are part of what is ultimately a global water balance and that what we do on our property in the way of development really can have far reaching effects. The display material will provide some simple concepts and remedies for developing land in a sustainable manner, particularly as it pertains to water management- whether you own large acreage, or a city lot; secondly, the Centre will be a physical focal point for field trips and workshops pertaining to watershed, woodlot, water flow processes and, as well, salmon related issues. The trips and workshops will be orientated toward Quadra youth and adults.

The Centre will serve several purposes. It will be open during the summer months on a regular basis and will function as tourist venue, complete with an on-site interpreter, and through the rest of the year as a meeting place, hosting educational workshops and field trips for Quadra islanders.

It has been a real process getting the Centre this far … some of you may remember our first public meetings beginning back in Jan 2005 when we kicked the project off. Since that time we have been working relentlessly to acquire sufficient funding and at the same time move ahead with development. We could not have got to the near-completion stage that we are today without the help of many local volunteers, skilled local talent and the several funders that have been involved. The ultimate success of this project will have been a real group effort. There is still more to do though (and money needed) so if you have time participate, there are some great opportunities.

Anyway, QISES is proud of what has been accomplished to date and would like to show our facility off to all of you who are interested. Please come on out on Feb. 23 and have a look – and bring the kids! In the interim, you can see a sample of some of the display material at the Quadra Credit Union, - a large painting that was done by Lesley Matthews as part of the salmon portion of the display work. If there are any questions before the Open House date please don’t hesitate to call Lawrie Bowles 285-2957.
