I am writing this a week early because I will be on a plane on deadline day, returning from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities five days of meetings in Winnipeg. I am not even sure where I left off at this point, so I will just throw a few news items out there for you since I have to leave the day after tomorrow.

First of all, I would like to thank my Alternate Director, Dan MacKenzie, for sitting in for me at the meetings on May 11th while we were away. He did a fine job of putting forward our issues. We had to do our pre-meeting briefings by cell phone and email since I was on the road, but it all worked out great. So, "Thanks Dan!”

I am very pleased to announce that at our last Board meeting on May 26th, I did manage to get a number of things accomplished that were considered to be long shots over the past months. Number one is the addition of two more properties to our sewer extension in the Cove, bringing it up to 40 properties, which will hopefully bring the annual operating costs down substantially once connected.

Also concerning the sewer we will be applying for major funds, as a priority, to the Federal government for funding for the project. Some criteria just changed in the program and our staff have gone ahead and applied for the money and we are told we have an excellent chance of getting it (not to jinx it, or anything). This was also passed by the Board last week.

The most exciting of the items (hard to rank) is that we have now achieved number one priority of our Board for the Canada 150 grant for seismic upgrading of our Community Centre. This is something that I have had to fight like crazy for at the Board (too long of a story to relate here), but we are at the top and being told we are likely to get the money. This will take a huge burden off of taxpayers since we had no choice but to upgrade. We were ordered to. Since this is our primary recreation facility and since it is our emergency reception centre, I had good ammunition in my argument for the priority. Fingers crossed!

The last of the big ones is what is being called the “Mt. Seymour Recreation Hub”. This is the area around Morte Lake and Chinese Mountains. This is another grant opportunity that had fallen off the end of the list, but with lots of lobbying, we got to first place. The deadline for the funding application is tomorrow.

So needless to say, I am feeling very good about some of these issues since we have been passed over in so many funding programs. We have great staff working on these programs and I sincerely appreciate their understanding of the importance of the issues to our area.

You will see some ads in the papers for Crown Lease applications by the SRD. These are for the three public wharves that we took over from the Feds last year. We need to have a Crown lease to cover the area of the wharves. You will also see ads for a small lodge at the mouth of Toba Inlet coming up soon. There will be a Public Hearing in June at Stuart Island for this rezoning.

My congratulations to all of the volunteers and people who made Mayday happen, once again, without a hitch…. Even the weather smartened up by the time the parade started up. It was a great day and our family certainly had a great time as always. Thanks again to all of the dedicated and creative folks who make this happen, rain or shine!

I am going to leave it there for now. I will be in Winnipeg from June 1st until June 7th, as I mentioned earlier. I will still have email access if you need to get hold of me, but I will be pretty busy lobbying the Feds for Ferries funding and west coast safety issues and money!

Feel free to contact me between the hours of 8:30 am and 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday (please, not on weekends or holidays, folks!) at 285-3355, or you can fax me at 285-3533 or you can email me anytime at  or by mail at Box 278 in the Cove, V0P 1N0… or on Facebook at…. If it is important, my cell is 250-830-8005… Lots of choices.

Please do not use my residential phone number for SRD calls. All business calls should be on 285-3355. Many thanks!

Respectfully submitted,

Jim Abram
