The Campbell River Art Gallery is delighted to present the solo exhibition 'Home Coming' by artist Sonny Assu, Friday June 17.
The Artist Talk begins at 6pm, with the Opening Reception scheduled for 7pm. Light refreshments will be provided. Everyone is welcome.
Home Coming is a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Sonny Assu. This survey-style exhibition features specific artworks that pertain to Assu’s familial lineage and the Northwest Coast region. Assu is Liǥwildaʼx̱w (We Wai Kai) of the Kwakwaka'wakw nations. The exhibition features sculptures, paintings, and digital intervention installation to compose a spatial exploration of Assu’s autobiographical artistic practice.
Home Coming will be on view at the Campbell River Art Gallery from 16 June - 21 July, 2016. Artworks on view in the exhibition are on loan from the Vancouver Art Gallery Collection, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria Collection, Equinox Gallery and the Collection of the Artist.
On Sunday June 19th Sonny Assu will be leading a Youth Engagement Workshop with ten local participants. This special opportunity, generously funded by the British Columbia Arts Council, allows local youth to work with an exhibiting artist, learn about their practice and make their own artwork. During this workshop, youth will create a cereal box artwork inspired by Assu's Breakfast Series (photographed above). We are thrilled to offer such a wonderful program, and to share a day of art making with local youth.
