With summer finally here it is becoming harder and harder to sit at my desk and glance out the window, thinking about all of the "good weather" jobs that need doing! The longer days help somewhat!

First of all, Happy Canada Day! Hope you all enjoy the celebration of 150 years of Confederation! We do live in the best country in the world, in spite of all its shortcomings at the Provincial and Federal political levels. Get out and celebrate. We have so much to be thankful for!

Public Hearing for Golf Course development

I will repeat here what I was required to read to all at the Public Hearing: “ After the Hearing closes the Directors will not be able to receive any further information from the public.” There was more and I repeated it a few times during my “script”. My point is, that people are still sending me submissions regarding the proposal. I am not allowed to read them and only forward them to the planners. So, please, just send any comments you have directly to the planners at jneillstrathconard.ca. I will not be able to read your comments unless the planners find something that we need to know that must be considered prior to making a decision. And if they did convey information to us, then we would have to have a second Public Hearing. I look forward to your cooperation and understanding of the process I am required to follow under the Local Govt. Act.

Connectivity… the ongoing saga

Last issue I informed you that I had not received one single comment on my comprehensive report on connectivity (i.e., high-speed, broadband and cell service). I made mention of that because I have been hearing nothing but comments on this topic for the past many years and I have been working on it continuously. So we, as a regional district, finally made some progress and since I didn’t receive any comments I was confused. So then I reprinted the pertinent information in the next report and the only comment (that’s right, one comment!) was a complaint about our local service provider. So, I’ll keep trying. I am attaching two items: one is a summary sheet and one is the complete document. We have applied for a lot of money and I am told that our application is looking really good and we should know by the end of July. I thought you might want to know that!

(Editor's note: Regretfully the attachments exceed this website's posting limits and can't be displayed.)

I hope that after you have looked at these documents you will see how much work is going into bringing us top-of-the-line services for the electronic age. I am doing my best and have managed to bring the SRD along in the process to the point that they have made it a Strategic Priority of the Board. I’ll fill you in as actions take place. Feel free to comment!

Evans Bay Park wharf

This project has been going on for years since the wharf was divested from Transport Canada. We have gone through so many iterations of repairs and rebuilding that I have lost track, but finally... finally, we are at the point of having everything in place and in motion. The SRD passed the motion below at our meeting which is the final piece in the puzzle:

6. Evans Bay Wharf – Release of Community Works Fund
That an additional $40,000 be released from the Electoral Area C Community Works Fund for the Evans Bay Park float dock replacement to bring the total allocation up to a total allocation of $120,000

This passed unanimously and please note that this is from Grant funding from the Fed’s and Province, administered through the UBCM. It is not from your property taxes.

I am going to leave it at that for now. More to follow in upcoming reports. Feel free to contact me between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday (please, not on weekends or holidays, folks!) at 285-3355, or you can fax me at 285-3533 or you can email me anytime at jimabramxplornet.ca or by mail at Box 278 in the Cove, V0P 1N0… or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JimAbram…. If it is important, my cell is 250-830-8005… Lots of choices.

Please do not use my residential phone number for SRD calls. All business calls should be on 285-3355. Many thanks!

Respectfully submitted,

Jim Abram
