You're invited to a free public talk on self-help tools for recovery from addictive substances and behaviours on Thursday, Sept. 28, sponsored by Quadra Circle. If a behaviour, even one that starts out as a healthy one, causes too many problems in our lives, it may be time to change. Behaviours become addictive when they:
Are the result of a pattern that becomes a ritual or habitual
Become stronger each time you do them
Involve short-term thinking in the pursuit of immediate pleasure, to feel “normal”, or to relieve discomfort or distress
Incur long-term costs, such as damaged relationships or serious financial hardship
We reinforce and strengthen our addictive behaviour when we are caught up in the repeating pattern of giving into urges to get relief. Recovery is about learning to replace unhealthy behaviours with healthier activities, leading to a more balanced life. Recovery is a personal journey. It is what you make it and can be how you want it to be.
SMART Recovery offers tools and support to help you on your journey. There is a new confidential w self-help support group on Quadra called SMART Recovery Quadra sponsored by Quadra Circle. Come and meet the facilitator, Laura McLaren, who will give a presentation from 2-4pm (same session repeated at 6:30-8:30 pm) about some of the techniques involved in SMART on Thursday September 28 in Rm 1 (downstairs) at the Community Centre. The SMART Recovery group will run on Thursday evenings starting October 5. Info: smartrecoveryquadragmail.com
