On Monday, February 12, the Quadra Island Garden Club presents a very timely public talk and slide show entitled “The Beauty & Practicality of Ponds” with certified permaculturist and pond specialist Mike Gall. The talk is at Quadra Island Community Centre from 7-9 pm. Admission for members is free and for non-members is only $3.00
Make Your Own Pond
Learn all about making ponds and their many benefits including: choosing the best location; preventing pond leaks; moving water around your property; swales and ditches; choosing excavators; what to do with the fill; fire suppression; irrigation. Mike will also show a video that include drone footage of his own ponds and gardens.
“Everyone should have at least one pond,” according to certified permaculture designer Mike Gall. Mike should know. As 10-year residents of Quadra Island, Mike and his wife Carol, also a permaculture designer, have developed four ponds on their 7.5 acres.
“Ponds are both beautiful and practical,” says Mike. “We have made ponds the defining feature and focal point of our landscape design.”
From Recreation to Fire Suppression
According to Mike, ponds contribute immensely to our environments from recreation and aesthetics to irrigation and fire suppression. As Captain on the Quadra Island Fire Department and Local FireSmart Representative, fire prevention and protection is naturally top of mind for Mike.
“Our ponds are the largest single design element contributing to the success of permaculture adventure. They are truly the focal point of the design. They have added tranquility and personal expression like no other feature I can think of. It is a delight to witness the daily transformations. Color, texture, mood and how the surrounding gardenscape interacts with its life giving force. “
