I hope that all of you had a wonderful Victoria Day weekend and managed to stay away from the ferry line-ups! Coincidently this report is coming out the day before our beloved Mayday at the Spit, the theme of which is “Love” this year.

On that note, I would like to tell you (as I have said before) that I “Love" serving you as your Regional Director and I am hoping that you will support me for another term as your Director! So this is my official announcement. I am "going for it” hoping to serve you to the best of my ability for another four year term.

People have been asking and encouraging me to let people know of my intentions and so here they are. Also my Alternate Director, Dan Mackenzie, has also confirmed that he would love to stay on in that capacity for the next term. He has done a great job in my occasional absence.

I have so many projects on the go at this time that are all proceeding positively and I would love to see them through to completion. Examples would be our fibre optic connectivity to all of our communities that I have been working on for 20+ years, our housing issues, keeping our young people on the island and attracting more, procuring the properties on Stuart Island (School District divestiture), the water lease in front of that property, the Land purchase and water lease at Surge Narrows, connecting of Cape Mudge Village to our Q. Cove sewer system, replacing the existing sewer treatment plant with a new unit (to be paid for with Grant money), the seismic upgrade at our Community Centre / Emergency Reception Centre, some sort of solution to the north island fire service needs, the Mt Seymour Recreation Area proposal, and the list goes on and on.

I think that you know that I an a passionate and dedicated individual and will continue to serve you well into the future. So, there you have it! I want to once again hold the position as your Regional Director for Area C, Discovery Islands - Mainland Inlets.

Medical Clinic retention meeting - May 24, 7pm at the Community Centre

As many of you may have heard, two of the doctors on the island are leaving in the near future. This is at Quadra Medical Clinic and does not have anything to do with Harbourside Medical Clinic. The loss of the doctors puts the viability of the clinic at risk. In order to keep our great Nurse Practitioner and the CR Lab services, there must be a doctor attached to the clinic. Long story, short, we need to put our heads together and do something. The consequences of losing the services would be dire. The meeting is to gather public thoughts on how to solve the problem, one of which is to form a society to “administer” the clinic. For any questions, please phone Mary McIntosh. We will be approaching Island Health and the ministry and the Minister for ideas and for help. (sorry this notice is late getting out.. the date was just set last week after the last report). There have been some preliminary meetings held which I attended.

Upcoming Public Hearings

There was a public meeting on May 15th regarding the new OCP and rezoning for the property next to the golf course. A public hearing will be held on June 19th at 7pm at the Community Centre. The following night (June 20th) there will be two public hearings for both OCP and Zoning changes for Swanson and for Mallice. They will be held at 7pm at the Community Centre. These two are for division for family purposes. Notices will be posted.

Business View magazine article

I am letting you know of this piece of news that came to our Chair last week. This is a meeting invite to an interview to be completed with Business View magazine. The completed article will be approximately six to eight pages, and we will be given final editing and approval before the publication runs. The magazine is a pretty big deal in North America and to be selected means we have been noticed. I believe it is the Connectivity innovation that drew their attention since we will be taking on the “majors” in the industry.

Areas to be covered during the interview include:
The history of the SRD (how it came to be, how long has it been established, number of Directors, geographic area covered, services provided)
Strategic Projects – REC-REATE, Connected Coast
Inclusivity and “green initiatives” – such as First Nations Relations, environment improvements, energy reduction projects)

The interview is scheduled to run for approximately 30 minutes, and we are planning to hold it on Thursday May 24.

Board Chair Babchuk has asked everyone included on this invite to be available to participate. Specifically, she would like me to speak on the history of the SRD as the longest serving Director, Director Cornfield to speak as the Chair of the First Nations Relations Committee and the work the SRD is doing to build those relationships. She would like CAO Leitch to be available for comment and to answer questions.

Federation of Canadian Municipalities

I will be attending this annual event on behalf of the Strathcona Regional District and really look forward to one part in particular - A seminar and tour of a super high level Waste to Energy facility that is actually in operation. I am so disgusted with the way our costs to bury garbage have gone up that I am excited to see that there might be another solution that is totally “green”. Report to follow! The convention lasts for five days and It is being held in Halifax. So I will be away until the 4th of June. The FCM represents over 2,000 local governments and gives us the opportunity to see how things are being dealt with right across the county. It is an extremely beneficial opportunity to gather new ideas from some progressive people.

In conclusion….
