THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST, 4-7 PM

As in previous years, QIMC will offer two walk-in flu clinics for ALL Quadra Island residents. Flu vaccine will also be available when in for an appointment or by appointment.
Last year was a disappointing year for the flu vaccine; it covered three strains with two A and one B. It was the second A strain covering H3N2 that was the least effective and this was the most common strain encountered last year.
For the 2018 season, the vaccine is covering two A and two B strains.
Publically funded vaccines this year include Influvac, fluviral (both trivalent vaccines), fluzone and flumist (for children, aged 6 months - 17 years). As per other years, flumist is the live attenuated nasal vaccine for children who have no contraindications.
The flu vaccine is recommended for all age groups, with particular attention to those who work in the health care industry, those who have elderly family in residential care, those with any chronic disease or those who are immunosuppressed. Pregnant women can receive the vaccine as well as children aged 6-59 months of age. If your child has never received the flu vaccine, it is given in 2 smaller doses four weeks apart.
Those with a latex or egg allergy can receive the vaccine. The only contraindication to getting the flu vaccine is previous allergy to the vaccine itself.
There is a high dose trivalent inactivated vaccine “Fluzone High-dose” that may offer improved coverage for adults 65 years of age and older. At this time, it is not covered under our provincial health plan so it will not be offered at the clinic. Some of the drug stores in Campbell River are taking names for administration at a cost of $75. per person.
