I work at Scout Environmental and we are working with Health Canada on the Radon Workplace Challenge. We are looking for workplaces across Canada who are interested in raising awareness of radon and encourage workplaces to inform their employees and networks about radon and encourage testing.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in rocks and soil. Exposure to radon gas is linked to 16% of lung cancer deaths annually in Canada. All employees are at risk of exposure to radon, whether this is in their homes or workplaces. Anyone can get lung cancer from radon without knowing it and this is an opportunity for employers to take a leadership role by providing information on radon to protect the health of employees and their families.
All participating workplaces receive 2 free radon test kits and resources to distribute to employees as they see fit. Since the best time to begin a radon test is during the fall/winter months, now is a great time to take action on radon. We are also offering tailored key messages that can be distributed through social media channels or member newsletters and Lunch and Learn sessions if interested. There is no cost to participate in the Challenge.
We have received confirmation of participation from a number of workplaces and would love to have your workplace and the Business Members of the Chamber take part in the Challenge. I was wondering if you could send out a note to your members about this opportunity? According to a Health Canada cross-country survey, many parts of British Columbia have reported elevated radon levels in homes and buildings.
