Harvesting Rainwater Presentation and Workshop

Bob Burgess of Rainwater Connection will use a series of slides from recent projects to show how rainwater is collected from roofs, cleaned and transported to a cistern to be distributed to the home and sanitized for potable water. Or if you are a gardener and want an extra supply of water to keep your plants growing and happy, rainwater can be a great solution to your water needs.

Bob was one of the presenters at the Quadra Sustainable Energy Fair that participants asked Sierra Quadra to invite back to Quadra for another appearance. He specializes in designing, installing and servicing rainwater-harvesting systems in the Gulf Islands, Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Over the past five years the company has demonstrated that rainwater can be an alternative source of high quality potable water for single-family dwellings. Rainwater Connection has been involved with hundreds of rainwater projects – from small garden water systems to large scale storage for nurseries; from small cottages to large integrated rainwater and well water systems providing up to 100,000 gallons of potable water per year.

Mr. Burgess was involved with a study on Mayne Island for the Islands Trust, which studied the potential amount of rainwater available for collection and typical household demand, both potable and non-potable and prepared projections about usage and rainfall potential for the next 25 years. Recently he has been involved with helping to develop Rainwater Harvesting Building Code Guidelines for single-family dwellings for the Islands Trust Board and the CRD. He was honoured in 2006 with a Stewardship Award from the Islands Trust for his ongoing work in designing and installing rain harvesting systems and his public education courses designed to make us all good stewards of our resources.
The Harvesting Rainwater presentation will be on Saturday, April 5 at the Community Centre. Doors will open at 7:00 pm and the presentation will start at 7:30 pm.
A hands-on workshop will be held on Sunday April 6 from 9am to 12:30pm. The cost of the Workshop is $80 and enrollment is limited to 8 persons to ensure sufficient one-on-one time to complete preliminary designs of each participant’s water system. If required a second workshop will be held in the afternoon. To pre-register phone Bob at 1 877 777 2155 or email bobrainwaterconnection.com.

Interested in saving water? Well first thing is save your $80 dollars and find a 45 gallon poly barrel, maybe ask one of the oyster growers, then fasten a spigot from the building supply they're cheap position your barrel under an eves or a drippy spot and VOILA 50 gallons of water at your disposal.
