In a synergistic convergence of group action on Earth Day 2008, the Comox Valley Water Watch Coalition, the Council of Canadians and the Comox Valley Environmental Council presented public policy expert John Calvert to the Comox Valley.
Calvert is an associate professor at Simon Fraser University, where he teaches public policy. He has a PhD from the London School of Economics in political science and an MA from the University of Western Ontario. He is the author of three books on Canadian public policy and economic issues and currently sits on the executive board of BC Citizens for Public Power.
In a thorough presentation of facts that are consolidated in his latest book Liquid Gold - Energy Privatization in British Columbia, Calvert informed the 100 + members of the audience about what amounts to a massive theft of public rights and resources. Unless citizens wake up to the reality of what is happening and take action soon, hundreds of wild rivers and ridges throughout the province will be forever altered by the greedy hand of privatization. And as Calvert eloquently points out, that is only the beginning of the deleterious consequences of what Globe and Mail columnist Mark Hume calls the worst public policy ever pursued by government in this province.
