TUESDAY MAY 20: Join Sierra Quadra for a presentation by Michelle Young and Will Soltau on sustainable salmon farming practices, at the Quadra Community Centre at 7pm.
The issue? It's been well documented that current salmon farming practices in our province are not environmentally – and therefore not economically – sustainable. Sea lice have been found on pink, chum, and sockeye salmon smolts, as well as on young herring. The problem is not in someone else's backyard somewhere up the coast – the situation exists right here in the waters around Quadra Island.
Sea lice is just one of the problems inherent with open net pen salmon farming. The solution, according to Michelle Young and Will Soltau, is to explore closed containment as a viable and sustainable option to open net pen technology.
This promises to be a lively presentation and discussion on an issue that impacts us close to home. So mark Tuesday May 20 on your calendar, and join us at the Community Centre at 7pm. Admission is by donation.
