WHAT eagles, vultures, night hawks, and tourists?

Is Blind Man's Bluff the right place for another Quadra gravel pit? A local company is asking the Ministry of Mines for permission to develop a gravel quarry at the base of Blind Man's Bluff – an enteprise which entails drilling and blasting as well as the usual heavy vehicle traffic associated with a gravel pit.

Blind Man's Bluff is both a nesting site and breeding ground for Turkey Vultures and Night Hawks, activities that will be threatened by this installation. Additionally, there are established eagle nests to the west of the bluffs, and the area at the bluff top is in a reserve within a woodlot.

Residents in the Copper Bluffs area have been complaining about commercial activity which has been going on here for nearly a year, the legality of which they feel is questionable.

Are you concerned? Then come to a meeting at the Community Centre on Monday, June 23 at 6:30 pm. It is your only chance to direct your comments and concerns about this issue to the Ministry of Mines. (Yes, the Ministry of Mines – no local government forum or process has been set in place to assess the project's impact on some of Quadra's critical wildlife habitat.)
Getting to Blind Man's Bluff

great idea! just so you know, blind man's bluff is out by the copper bluffs area on north gowland harbour road. you get there off hyacinthe bay road - the turnoff is about 4.5 km north of hy. bay and west roads.

there's a bunch of great hiking trails in there, with awesome views – and of course the habitat is pretty significant for many species.

go have a look! blind man's bluff is, i believe, written up on the current quadra trails map, available for 2 bucks at the gas station and other island outlets.

cheers,

Dear Editor...
There are so many interesting places on Quadra. I have never heard of Blind Man's Bluff. Could you please post a picture of this area as it appears now, and/or a map with this area on it, so those interested could visit the area and make an informed opinion? Thank you!
