Corbin Murdoch and the Nautical Miles are back for another bout of touring after a couple of seasons off the road. The last six months have been anything but an idle time for the band. The Nautical Miles, who celebrated their fifth year anniversary in May, have been hard at work on their third album Wartime Lovesong.
The album is a collection of songs Murdoch wrote about his family and their political and emotional persuasions. “It’s about love, revolution, war and family, and about how the different generations of my family think of these things,” writes Murdoch. A departure from their usual subject matter, the songs are sonically more ambitious as well. Arranged to be played with a brass quintet the band has continued to develop their dynamic, textured sound.
After finishing work on the new record, Murdoch spent five weeks this summer touring Europe with fellow singer-songwriters Melisa Devost and Sarah MacDougall. The trio of Canadian Songwriters toured England, Sweden, Denmark and Poland, playing all kinds of venues including sold out folk clubs, Swedish discotheques, and a stop at the legendary Isle of Wight Festival.
Back from his solo endeavours, Murdoch is happy to be hitting the road with the full band. “We are really excited to be out touring these new songs,” says Murdoch. “We’ve been working really hard on them for the last six months, arranging them first for the brass, and then trying to translate the intensity of those arrangements for our usual four piece configuration. The shows we’ve played so far have all gone really well. We’re excited for more people to hear what we are doing these days.”
